During my last semester of law school, I discovered the ABC hit show "Shark Tank." I binge watched the entire first two seasons in less than two weeks and was hooked. Now ending its 8th season, I often think about what it is that makes Shark Tank so successful and intriguing (hint: it's not Mark Cuban).
More than anything, I think the show represents hope. They often mention "the American Dream" during an episode, but what that really means is that this is still a land of opportunity, that anyone with an idea, enough passion, and the right guidance can become a business owner and achieve success. As a business lawyer, there is nothing more satisfying than being able to help people pursue and accomplish those dreams! Art Law is a fascinating niche field that relies on several skill sets, including contracts, intellectual property (especially copyright), and personal property. Contemporary art law found its roots in the aftermath of WWII, when the allies sought to return art and artifacts pilfered by the Nazis to their rightful owners. In fact, the FBI now has its own team of agents dedicated to art theft! If you have questions about art acquisitions, appreciation, valuation, donation, or public display rights, contact attorney Benjamin Simon, one of the only lawyers familiar with the fine art industry in Kansas or MIssouri, to set up a consultation.
I have a confession not many attorneys will make. I really respect my clients. Many have become close friends. So when a client needs me to do something really "non-traditional," I'm usually game.
What does that mean? Well, I have one client that has several rental properties. They had to evict a tenant who hadn't paid rent in several months. When they went to clean out the house, they discovered the tenant had kept several dogs locked in the basement. The carpeting was totally ruined with dog waste. The client called me on a Saturday moarning, and we spent the day pulling up some of the nastiest carpeting you've ever seen (or smelled!) Are you looking to start your own business in Overland Park but need a lawyer help with all the paperwork?
Good news, the Law Office of Benjamin J. Simon is here to help! I offer special flat rate fees to draft Articles of Organization and Operating Agreements (for LLCs), or Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws (for corporations), will obtain a tax id/employer id number, and file registrations with the state departments of revenue and labor. Contact me today to set up a consultation! Reminder that today is tax day! You must either file your return or for an extension. If you are having tax issues, I am available to answer your questions!
Usually Tax Day is April 15, but this year it falls on the 18th. There are two reasons - first, taxes cannot be due on the weekend, and second, because Washington, DC typically celebrates Emancipation Day on April 16, but because that is a Sunday this year it gets pushed to April 17...hence we get a three-day reprieve! |
